Travel: Urban Light at LACMA

Thursday, January 26, 2017

We came from a Korean dinner that lasted until midnight when we decided to pass by this place. I wasn't aware at that time yet that 'Urban Light' is one of the most photographed spots in LA. I haven't even heard of it prior to going to LA.

To give you a short background of this small but Instagram-worthy tourist spot, 'Urban Light' is a work of art of Chris Burden. It's an installation composed of 202 antique cast iron street lamps which he collected, and painted uniform gray. Most of these lamps once lit the streets of Southern California in the 1920's and 1930's. These lamps were restored and are now aligned in a forest-like configuration near the entrance of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

It was already midnight when we went there but there were still a few people who are also checking out the forest of lamps despite the late hour. It was actually kinda hard to take a decent clean photo without someone photobombing in the background. Lol! This place looks to be equally stunning at daylight but the best time to visit would be at night when all the lamps are lit up. The lamps are solar powered by the way so it doesn't really matter that 202 lamps are all being lit up everyday from dusk till dawn.

If you're into movies, you could spot this place on Ashton Kutcher's 'No Strings Attached' and 'Valentine's Day'.

Urban Light is free for everyone 24/7.
Location: 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036
