Make brushing more fun with Minions!

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Earlier this month, we paid a visit to a pediatric dentist... it was Kiel's first dental check up. At 22 months, I know it was already a little bit late for his first dental visit. The ideal time should be as early as 6 months or when the first tooth emerges.

As with other typical babies his age, brushing his teeth is always a struggle. It would take at least 3 persons in order for him to get a decent toothbrushed teeth: one to hold him down, another to do the actual brushing and another one to pin his struggling arms and legs. As much as we wanted him to have a healthy set of teeth, he doesn't understand this yet.

It was a relief when the dentist told us that his teeth was healthy. There was stain on the front teeth which the dentist was able to remove. A little bit of cleaning was done and fluoride treatment was given. Then we will come back after 6 months.

Kiel eats anything with gusto. Brushing his teeth should be part of his everyday routine in order to eliminate cavities which could cause tooth decay.

Before we left the clinic, we were taught on how to properly do the brushing, with a matching demo. We were also shown pictures of his actual clients with extreme cases of tooth decay. It was scary and unimaginable! I promised myself after that to take responsibility in taking care of Kiel's teeth.

Brushing should be a daily routine for us and the kids. To make it a fun time where they aren't stressed about the idea, I've gathered up ways to make brushing time something to look forward to.

1. Brush with your kid. Be a good example. What better way to spend bonding time than over a couple of minutes of family bonding holding a toothbrush with a toothpaste. Use some storytelling and role playing involving tooth fairies and cavity monsters to make it interactive. The kid would most probably await this time as well.

2. Use an app. There are free downloadable apps such as the Toothsavers app which gives kids a mission: to save the kingdom from an evil sorceress’s wicked spell. This app will teach your kid how to brush step-by-step with humor and whimsy. Brush for the entire 2 minutes with the video twice a day to get your child to unlock new characters. This will automatically monitor how often brushing takes place everytime the app is used.

3. Do a sticker reward system. Using a calendar, the child can choose what sticker to put on the day he brushed his teeth. A reward can be given when a certain criteria is met. Say buy him a toy or take him to the zoo or amusement park when all days of the month has a sticker.

4. Use character toothbrush and flavored toothpaste such as Colgate's Minion Toothbrush and Minions Toothpaste. Not only is the minion toothbrush attractive to the eyes of a child but it is also soft to the gums. The bubble fruit flavored toothpaste has fluoride which is important to fight against cavities.
